Letter to my mentor
Article Abstract:
Mutual respect and an equal commitment to nursing excellence are important factors in establishing a good relationship between student nurses and their mentors. The ideal mentor encourages the student to ask questions and makes time to understand the student's learning needs. Mentors should encourage students to set learning targets, praise good work and correct mistakes in a constructive way that does not make the student feel demoralised. While good mentors are providing excellent role models for their students, it is important that their own needs are not ignored.

Project 2000: back to basics
Article Abstract:
The future role of the health care assistant (HCA) will determine the relevance of Project 2000 in nursing education. The Government and nursing education reformers have regarded the project as a means of enhancing the professional status of nurses. However, the government aims to cut costs by distinguishing between professional and non-professional care. The HCA with different levels of training through National Vocational Qualifications blurs the distinction between nurses and support staff. Some believe that the HCA will replace professional nurses.
