Justice Dept. approves rural Calif. physician network
Article Abstract:
Sierra CommCare Inc., a physicians' preferred provider network, has received Justice Dept. approval to contract through a third party with health maintenance organizations, health insurance companies and employers. Antitrust guidelines permit health networks to operate with physician concentration in a region if price-fixing is avoided. Sierra CommCare is located in Ridgecrest, CA, a small town with one 80-bed hospital, about 100 miles from the nearest acute care medical center.

Managed care contracts: some progress, but problems linger
Article Abstract:
State and federal legislative actions make it appear as if progress is being made against problematic contractural relations between physicians and health plans, but there is still conflict on many fronts. In Florida, Aetna US Healthcare contracts with physicians give the company unilateral authority in key areas. Doctors should not passively agree to work under contract terms that are unfair to them or their patients.
