Intensive care units: they save lives, but physicians argue whether their high cost justifies use

Intensive care units are being scrutinized because of their high cost to health care resources. Many patients who receive the most expensive intensive care do not live longer than a year. This has lead physicians to reevaluate the criteria for intensive care usage.

All-out attack launched on infant mortality in Washington, D.C
Article Abstract:
Hospitals in the poorest section of Washington, D.C. cut the death rate in half for premature infants. Emphasis on care of pregnant women, special training of hospital staff and more neonatal equipment brought about a sharp decline in infant deaths.
