Researching communication approaches to heart disease prevention
Article Abstract:
Extensive research work can be very important in relation to the decisions which need to be made when drawing up health communication strategies. Research commissioned from the Advertising Research Unit by the Health Education Board for Scotland was used as the basis for devising a coronary heart disease (CHD) prevention programme, as the Health Education Board believed that it should first understand the consumer's views. Campaign material which does not take these views into account will be ineffective, and an initial consumer-based research stage is therefore essential.

Researching black and minority ethnic groups
Article Abstract:
A number of methodological and conceptual problems arise when attempting to research black and minority ethnic groups. Certain terms can be misleading, and labels cannot always be conveniently allocated. These issues must be addressed right at the start of a research project, as the initial approach will determine data collection, analysis and presentation of findings. In the health sector, the many different languages, lifestyles and religions of the UK's black and minority ethnic population must be taken into account if an adequate service is to be provided.

Qualitative research and the gingerbread man
Article Abstract:
There is now a clear trend towards the use of qualitative methods in health research in the UK. This is certainly a challenging approach, but must be viewed with some caution. It is particularly important to be aware of the need to look at deeper issues than simply the technical aspects of qualitative methods. It is also necessary to question dominant views about the nature of 'science' itself.
