Article Abstract:
Moving the burns unit from St, Lawrence Hospital, Chepstow to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, UK, will result in the loss of approximately 95% of its experienced nursing staff because of the lengthened commute. This will lead to a lack of expertise at the new unit. St. Lawrence Hospital has taken on more trainees, but they will not be able to replace the lost expertise quickly. The unit, which is relocating to make it more geographically accessible, has about 130 beds to treat oral and plastic surgery and burns patients.

Oral analgesics
Article Abstract:
The increased availability of non-prescription analgesics should not mislead the nurse into prescribing these drugs without being fully informed of the inherent dangers. In the United Kingdom around 200 people die from overdose of aspirin and paracetamol each year. Prior to suggesting the use of such drugs the nurse must be aware that dosage will depend on a patient's age, medical conditions and any other medication being used. A pharmacist can give informed advice to the patient and the nurse.

Learning to care
Article Abstract:
Nurse training has changed greatly since the 1950s. Joan Cape, who trained in the 1950s, believes she received a superb training, although discipline was tough and she was treated like a child. Deborah Steven, who has completed Project 2000, spent the first seven months of training in the classroom. She then found it hard to apply her learning in the ward.
