Legal aspects of physician-assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
The United States Supreme Court is considering whether there is a constitutionally protected right to physician-assisted suicide in a 1997 case that reviews Washington and New York state laws banning the practice. Meanwhile Rhode Island has enacted laws in 1996 making physician-assisted suicide a felony. Issues of competency and terminal illness have framed the debate over whether assisted suicide should be allowed, and how it can be distinguished from euthanasia. If assisted suicide is allowed by the courts, setting parameters will be difficult.

Labor law update
Article Abstract:
Nurse executives can only ensure proper decisions when they are aware of labor laws. Although the common law employment-at-will doctrine stated that employees could be discharged at any time, exceptions to the doctrine providing the employee some rights have been carved out in recent years. The public policy exception protects the employee against discharge for any reasons contrary to public policy. Pregnancy discrimination has also appeared as an allegation in employment lawsuits.

Legal issues in long-term care
Article Abstract:
It may be advisable for managers of long-term care facilities to be alert to incidents of intentional neglect or abuse of their residents. Legal action has been taken against employees and family members found guilty of physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and murder. Standard malpractice policies do not cover these acts. Compensation as awarded by a jury may vary. Most states have laws that either require or encourage witnesses to report elder abuse.
