The quality renaissance
Article Abstract:
A quality renaissance is underway in health care. Related bills to impose broad regulations on the managed care industry have been introduced in the House and the Senate. A coalition of 60 groups of medical providers has formed to lobby for it. President Bill Clinton in March 1997 appointed 34 members, 3 of whom are nurses, to the Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry. The commission's eventual report will involve information disclosure, choice of providers and plans, and consumer responsibilities. The American Nurses Assoc. is working on gathering quality-related data and making effective use of the data.

Primary care is a relationship
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Medicine's Future of Primary Care Committee released a report explaining their vision for the future of health care delivery and provider patient relationships. Primary care should focus on comprehensive services designed to address health care and information needs of the patient. The committee also hopes primary care providers will foster strong relationships with patients and act as patient advocates in the ongoing battles between health services needs and finance.

NPs: Part of the Medicare Reform Solution
Article Abstract:
The American Nurses Assn (ANA) has offered a proposal for Medicare reform that would give a key role to nurse practitioners (NPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). NPs and CNSs would become preferred primary care providers, while registered nurses (RNs) would act as case managers and care coordinators. Under the ANA plan, Medicare would focus on primary health care, wellness, prevention and early intervention.
