Liability a threat to future of biomedical materials
Article Abstract:
Rapidly rising legal liability costs for biomedical materials are gradually forcing production companies to file for bankruptcy protection, dramatically scale back their production of these materials or exit the market altogether. This will very quickly and significantly impact the availability of medical implants, causing widespread distress to untold numbers of patients. Legislation currently under consideration by Congress would limit biomedical material and implant manufacturer liability and cap punitive damages. If the bill becomes law, then physicians must beware of becoming the next target of so-called 'deep-pocket' suits.

We're waging war on drugs on the wrong front
Article Abstract:
The US should fight the war on drugs by decreasing demand through addict treatment, rather than by trying to eradicate drug supply lines. Benefit managers have responded to increased mental health and substance abuse care costs by cutting insurance benefits. By allocating a fixed percentage of premiums to addict treatment, only a limited number of patients receive care, while addiction continues to spread. Of the $12.7 billion budget for drug control in 1993, only $2.2 billion will go to social programs, the rest is for enforcement and border control. More money must be spent on cures.

Medical writing should eschew its obfuscations
Article Abstract:
Most articles in medical journals are badly written and difficult to understand. The use of big words, too frequent statistics and random acronyms may result from the writer's failure to understand the subject matter. Busy doctors need to read and keep up with new trends in medicine, but overly complicated sentence structure and meaningless phrases do not invite the reader to continue.
