Lifting developments
Article Abstract:
Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Trust, England has been preparing for the introduction of European Community manual handling directives on Jan 1, 1993. A working group has drawn on the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974 and the EC directive to devise manual handling policies and protocols. The policy emphasises the need for training and adequate resources. The protocol establishes areas of responsibility for executives, managers and employees. Two training options have been suggested. Two yearly training for all staff would cost 11,000 pounds sterling per annum. Training of key staff would cost 4,500 pounds per annum.

Scope for extensions
Article Abstract:
The 1992 United Kingdom Central Council publication 'The Scope of Professional Practice' has replaced nurses' extended role policy. Professional accountability has removed the rigidity of task limitation practices. However, Manchester nurses introduced the new system in 1991. Clinical nurse specialists assess the competence of nurses who develop their skills according to patient needs. The greatest change has been in the way nurses perceive their role.

Careful talk saves lives: a survey of NT readers shows how nurses have become disaffected with the amount of time they have to talk to patients
Article Abstract:
Nurses feel they have limited time to talk to patients according to a survey of nurses, midwives, health visitors and students. 95% of those surveyed felt that patients would benefit from time taken to talk with them. Some nurses felt guilty about taking time to talk to patients as they felt their colleagues would have to do their work, and others are often too busy with administration.
