Vascular reactivity in patients with preeclampsia and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) syndrome
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women with the HELLP syndrome do not have abnormal changes in blood vessel function that are commonly seen in pregnant women with preeclampsia. This means that these two complications of pregnancy could have different causes.

Lipid hydroperoxides and free radical scavenging enzyme activities in preeclampsia and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) syndrome: no evidence for circulating primary products of lipid peroxidation
Article Abstract:
Researchers were unable to find evidence of lipid oxidation in blood samples from healthy pregnant women and pregnant women with preeclampsia or the HELLP syndrome. However, they did find evidence of increased oxidative stress in the women with preeclampsia or the HELLP syndrome. Both of these conditions are serious complications of pregnancy.

Preeclampsia - a state of sympathetic overactivity
Article Abstract:
The rise in blood pressure that occurs during preeclampsia appears to be a result of an increase in activity in the sympathetic nervous system. This causes blood vessels to contract, which raises blood pressure. Researchers used microelectrodes to measure sympathetic nerve activity in the skeletal muscles of 9 pregnant women with preeclampsia, 8 pregnant women with normal blood pressure, 6 nonpregnant women with normal pressure and 7 nonpregnant women with hypertension. Nerve activity was 2 to 3 times higher in those with preeclampsia compared to the other women. This activity returned to normal levels following delivery.
