Living-donor transplants reexamined: experts cite growing concerns about safety of donors
Article Abstract:
Some surgeons recommend developing a registry of all people who donate an organ while they are still alive so doctors can monitor their outcome. This is called a living-donor transplant and usually involves donating a kidney or a piece of the liver. At least 16 people who donated a kidney or partial liver have died. Some transplant centers give potential donors up to 20 hours of intense counseling to make sure the donor understands the risks involved.
