Long-term Satisfaction and Psychological and Social Function Following Bilateral Prophylactic Mastectomy
Article Abstract:
Many women who have a prophylactic mastectomy are able to adjust and have no serious psychological or emotional aftereffects. Women at high risk of breast cancer are often given a mastectomy to prevent the cancer from developing. Although it is potentially devastating to lose a healthy breast, a survey of 572 women who had both breasts removed showed that most were satisfied. The loss of both breasts did not adversely affect their emotional stability, self-esteem, stress levels, sexual relationships, or femininity. However, one-fourth to one-third were dissatisfied with their sexual relationships and body image.

Increased risk for cancer in patients with the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
Article Abstract:
Patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome appear to have a substantially increased risk of cancer. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an inherited disorder characterized by intestinal polyps and pigmented lesions on the skin and mucous membranes. Researchers reviewed the medical history of 34 patients with the syndrome. During the study period, 53% of patients developed cancer. Overall, patients had ten times the risk of cancer as people in the general population. The risk of cancer was particularly elevated for women, who had 19 times the general cancer risk.
