Low-Molecular-Weight Heparins Compared with Unfractionated Heparin for Treatment of Acute Deep Venous Thrombosis
Article Abstract:
Low-molecular-weight heparins are cost-effective for treating deep vein thrombosis, especially in an outpatient setting. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when blood clots form in the large veins of the leg. Researchers used information from the medical literature to evaluate the use of low-molecular-weight heparin compared with regular heparin in a hypothetical group of men with deep vein thrombosis. Although low-molecular-weight heparin was more expensive than regular heparin, it produced fewer costly complications, so total costs were the same. Low-molecular-weight heparin was less costly when used in an outpatient setting.

Factors associated with fatalities and injuries from hot-air balloon crashes
Article Abstract:
Hot-air balloon crashes may cause significant injury and even death. According to a review of data collected by the Civil Aeronautics Board and the National Transportation Safety Board, 495 hot-air balloon crashes occurred between 1964 and 1995. The crashes affected 1,533 riders and led to 384 serious injuries and 92 deaths. Eighty-five percent of the crashes were linked to pilot error or incapacitation. Colliding with power lines or the ground were the most frequent causes of serious injury or death.

Cost-effectiveness of Automated External Defibrillators on Airlines
Article Abstract:
Placing automated external defibrillators on most US commercial airplanes may be cost-effective especially on planes with more than 100 passengers. Defibrillators are used to shock the heart when a person is in cardiac arrest. Most automated external defibrillators are easy to use with minimal training.
