Effects of Taxol on choriocarcinoma cells
Article Abstract:
The anti-cancer drug Taxol (paclitaxel) may be effective in treating choriocarcinoma. Choriocarcinoma is a malignant tumor in the uterus that arises from a fertilized egg. Researchers tested the ability of Taxol to inhibit the growth of two choriocarcinoma cell lines and six ovarian cancer cell lines. Taxol was capable of inhibiting growth of the choriocarcinoma cell lines by 50% at concentrations of 1 to 3 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). Higher concentrations of 3 to 10 nmol/L were necessary to inhibit growth of the ovarian cancer cell lines by 50%. Taxol also increased the production of human chorionic gonadotropin, which indicates that the tumor is differentiating into mature tissue. Microscopic analysis also revealed that the choriocarcinoma cells were differentiating. The principle physiologic action of Taxol is to stabilize microtubules, which prevents malignant cells from dividing.

Ovarian preservation in the surgical treatment of cervical carcinoma
Article Abstract:
Women with early stage cervical cancer do not need to have their ovaries removed. Researchers analyzed the prognosis of 300 women, half of whom had both ovaries removed while the other half had one or both ovaries. Five- and ten-year survival rates were similar in both groups and the rate of survival free of disease were also above 90% in both groups. One percent of the women with one or both ovaries had to have them removed eventually, all because of a benign ovarian disease.
