MERG: medication event rating grid
Article Abstract:
A medication event rating grid (MERG) can be used by nurse managers to track errors and train staff to reduce errors. Events are tracked in a four-step process and rated on the MERG as serious or less serious. Individual attention is given to staff members, with remediation plans and follow-up forms. The forms have four sections, ending with completion of the remediation plan. This use of MERGs should improve staff development.

Teaching effective communication skills
Article Abstract:
Nurse managers should help their staff develop effective communication skills, and this can be done with an ongoing educational program. This should foster better job satisfaction and personal interactions. Since poor communication is a major cause of job stress for nurses, this stress should also decline. A teaching program should distinguish between effective and ineffective communication, and also include case examples.
