Making sense of ...parenteral nutrition in adult patients
Article Abstract:
Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a method of giving nutrients to patients via the blood stream when they do not have a functioning gut. Patients suffering from a range of conditions including severe burns or Crohn's disease may receive PN. PN is comprised mostly of water plus fat and glucose and it must be kept sterile while being prepared or while being given to patients to avoid infection. Some patients receive PN on a long term basis at home with specialist help. A table outlining patients eligible for PN is given.

Making sense of bowel preparation
Article Abstract:
Nurses need to prepare patients' bowels prior to bowel surgery. This preparation involves ensuring that patients do not eat or drink so that the stomach and colon become empty, although the the small bowel will always contain some digestive juices. Some patients might need to be deprived of nourishment a number of times in a short space of time, which can cause mental and physical problems, and they will need to be given support and information to enable them to cope.

Making sense of the care of patients with pancreatitis
Article Abstract:
It is important for nurses to understand that pancreatitis, in which oedema arises within the pancreatic tissue, may appear to be a mild condition but can in fact have severe short- and long-term effects. In patients with chronic pancreatitis, steatorrhoea and hyperglycaemia are usually present, and they can be in considerable pain. The main approach to treatment is symptom management, including dietary changes, but surgery may be required.
