Management of multiple sclerosis
Article Abstract:
Several promising drugs are available for treating multiple sclerosis and more are under investigation. Multiple sclerosis is a central nervous system disease characterized by an autoimmune attack against myelin, which surrounds most nerves. It is believed to be triggered by a viral infection, but it also has a genetic component. Corticosteroids are the drug of choice but interferon beta has also proved effective. However, interferon beta is expensive and should not be given to patients with mild disease. Glatiramer acetate, azathioprine, immune globulin, methotrexate, and cyclophosphamide are other effective treatments.

The many roles of chemokines and chemokine receptors in inflammation
Article Abstract:
A study of the properties of chemokines and their receptors and their roles in selected clinical disorders is illustrated. Chemokines are small heparin-binding proteins that direct the movement of circulating leukocytes to sites of inflammation or injury and also play a crucial part in directing the movement of mononuclear cells throughout the body, engendering the adaptive immune response and contributing to the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases.
