Managing challenge
Article Abstract:
Hospital ward managers need broader management skills within a reformed United Kingdom National Health Service. Training programmes would assist the transition from clinical to management posts. Increased devolution of authority has necessitated skills in resource management, budget control and staff appointment. Management interests should extend beyond the ward to regional planning. Patient care and staff motivation should improve through clinical and managerial expertise in ward management.

Skill muddle?
Article Abstract:
A study into skill mixing on a primary nursing psychogeriatric ward revealed that many trained and untrained staff could not clearly define their roles. The study determined that the auxiliaries made valuable contributions to ward reports and case conferences, and were able to communicate on a social level. Qualified nurses were more involved in teaching and explaining, and sometimes felt that the auxiliaries were doing a better job than themselves.

Cost-effective care
Article Abstract:
A review of skill mix at Leicester General Hospital revealed that work pressures were detrimental to most aspects of care, apart from hands-on care. The mismatch in staff timetables and the role of ward clerks were studied, and the role of professionally qualified nurses were clarified. The mixture of skills needed for patient care over a set period was assessed. The project helped to increase job satisfaction.
