Market propels nation's oldest hospital into partnership
Article Abstract:
Pennsylvania Hospital's decision to join the University of Pennsylvania Health System reflects the increasing consolidation and competition that has come to characterize the health care industry. Industry observers predict that the hospital will initially serve as a subsidiary of the health network and may eventually merge with its new partner. Hospital officials predict that the quality and availability of services will not be substantially changed by the partnership, although hospital physicians fear they will lose their autonomy as well as their choice of diverse practice options once it is ratified.
