Medical staff leadership presents special challenges
Article Abstract:
Medical staff leaders are being forced to become conflict resolution experts by rapid changes in reimbursement and practice. If the elected president of a medical staff is a member of specialty department, issues of dual allegiances invariably arise. Several conflict resolution techniques are described, including careful agenda-setting. Negotiating fair processes is usually just as important as negotiating the substance of most disputes.

New model helps identify patients ICU can't save
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Stanford University Hospital have developed a model for determining whether patients may benefit from intensive care. Patients in the 'potentially ineffective care' category may not benefit from intensive care hospitalization and are likely to die within 100 days after discharge. Physicians could focus on providing comfort to these patients rather than expensive and possibly ineffective treatments.
