Meeting the challenges of changing times
Article Abstract:
The American Dental Association (ADA) is improving its services and programs. The ADA completed the second phase of an information technology upgrade. Its Board voted to fund development of an association management software system, including training and implementation, for the ADA's component dental societies. The ADA's online site, just one year old, has been upgraded. The Board voted to authorize formation of the ADA Holding Company whose mandate is the automation of dental practice, especially the automation of electronic claims processing. The ADA also continues to inform and advise members regarding changes in the dental marketplace.

Chronic disabling diseases and disorders: the challenges of fibromyalgia
Article Abstract:
Fibromyalgia is a chronic, disabling condition that can cause facial pain, and should be of interest to dentists. Symptoms include tenderness at specific sites along the body, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbance, anxiety and depression. Fibromyalgia may afflict 2% of the population, and 80-90% of patients are women. Malfunctions of the chemicals which mediate pain perception, the neurotransmitter serotonin, and regulation of the thyroid hormone are possible causes. Antidepressant drugs, exercise, and physical and psychological therapies can be helpful, but full recovery is rare.

Changing treatment patterns
Article Abstract:
The improvement in oral health since the 1960s will substantially change dental practice in the 21st century. Fewer people will have cavities or require extensive restorations such as crowns and bridges. Fewer people will lose their teeth, so the demand for dentures may also wane. Dentists will see more and more patients who have minimal tooth disease. For this reason, much dental care may become preventive. This also means dentists will be able to see more patients.
