Men behaving badly
Article Abstract:
Forty-eight per cent of the nurses involved in disciplinary hearings in the UK are male nurses, yet male nurses comprise only 9% of the total number of registered nurses. Any investigation of the reason for this disparity is a delicate matter, but the UKCC is having to investigate for reasons of public protection. Factors contributing to the statistics could be that men tend to be more visible in a service dominated by females, that people are keener to report male errors, or that more men work in learning disability and mental health fields where there are more instances of bad conduct.

Top-earning nurses: who's in the money ...
Article Abstract:
Top nurses in National Health Service (NHS) management earn significantly more than top nurses on clinical grades, yet their salaries still compare badly to those received by similar post-holders from other occupations. An NHS trust nursing director earns around 47,000 pounds sterling, for example, but the trust's financial director will earn around 52,000 pounds sterling, an education director earns around 65,000 pounds sterling, and police chief constables earn around 115,000 pounds sterling. Salaries of top nurses in government, trade unions and the private sector are also examined.
