Mental illness takes heavy toll on youth
Article Abstract:
A survey of mental illness in the United States indicates that mental illness tend to strike early in life and delays in treatment leave affected individuals vulnerable to debilitating symptoms during their most productive years. According to the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, half of all individuals who have a mental illness during their lifetime report that the onset of disease occurred by age of 14 years and three-fourths by age of 24 years.

Link between smoking and mental illness may lead to treatments
Article Abstract:
The study is carried out to understand how nicotine's effects may be beneficial to smokers with a mental illness and to find the role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and other biomolecules in psychiatric disorders. Scientists are exploring drugs that target the nicotine receptors but lack the drawbacks of nicotine itself.

Many teens abusing medications
Article Abstract:
The number of teens using illicit drugs has reduced in the U.S., but the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication has remained very high. Opiate analgesics and hydrocodone are among the most commonly used drugs among teens along with over-the-counter cold and cough medicine containing dextromethorphan.
