Military intervention
Article Abstract:
Carbolic acid was first used in a Glasgow operating theater in 1896 as an air disinfect and wound disinfectant. The Prussian army began using sterilized pre-packaged wound dressing 1870, with the idea quickly spreading across the developing world. The practise of sterilizing all metal surgical equipment was adopted in Berlin in 1886 as a method of ensuring all bacteria were destroyed and not likely to infect a wound. The introduction of sterile surgical gloves ensured surgeons did not pass on any infections to surgery patients.

New illness, old attitude: Are we still harbouring medieval attitudes to sexually transmitted infections
Article Abstract:
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are mentioned in the Bible and in ancient Greek and Chinese medical texts. The most common STI is believed to have been gonorrhoea until the 15th century, when syphilis reached pandemic proportions. Treatment was based on mercury ointments, until the 19th century, when arsenic preparations were the favoured options. Now again, populations are threatened by a life-threatening pandemic spread by sexual contact, HIV.

Pneumonia: still a deadly disease
Article Abstract:
The introduction of antibiotics helped the developed world overcome its fear of pneumococcal pneumonia, although the rise in antibiotic-resistant strains should be tackled quickly to avoid the disease becoming wide spread. Up to 5 million people die each from pneumonia, mainly from bacterial pneumonia, often associated with HIV and AIDs. Other forms of pneumonia are less common but still as deadly if not treated with the correct antibiotics.
