Mission impossible
Article Abstract:
In 1991 the South Manchester Accident Rescue Team (SMART) established an emergency health station for Kurdish refugees at Nowsud, Iran. Three teams of six medical practitioners tended over 150 patients daily in two ridge tents. The most common complaints were gastroenteritis, typhoid and meningitis. After 10 days heat and exhaustion necessitated withdrawal, however the Red Crescent continued a limited clinic service. The team gained satisfaction from reducing the mortality rate, developing clinical skills and operating cooperatively under difficult conditions.
