Modafinil for narcolepsy
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved modafinil for the treatment of narcolepsy. People with narcolepsy fall asleep at inappropriate times of the day. The drug, sold under the trade name Provigil in the US and Alertec in Canada, is a non-amphetamine stimulant. In clinical trials, it improved daytime alertness to between 50% and 70% of normal. However, long-term use leads to a loss of effectiveness. Although it may not be as effective as other stimulants, it has less potential for abuse.
