New Options for the Treatment of Epilepsy

Article Abstract:

New treatments for epilepsy are discussed. These include the drugs felbamate (trade name Felbatol), gabapentin (Neurontin), lamotrigine (Lamictal), topiramate (Topamax), tiagabine (Gabitril), and vigabatrin (Sabril). The Vagus nerve stimulator is a new nonpharmacologic treatment which consists of a generator implanted in the chest, with a stimulating lead attached to the left vagus nerve. A handheld magnet can be used to activate the device at the start of a seizure. New formulations of older drugs have improved the treatment of seizures, including rectal diazepam and a water-soluble form of phenytoin.

A comparison of rectal diazepam gel and placebo for acute repetitive seizures

Article Abstract:

A rectal suppository containing diazepam appears to be effective in people with recurring seizures. In a study of 125 children and adults with recurring seizures, the drug was more effective than a placebo in preventing recurrent seizures. Thirty-five patients experienced a side effect of the drug, most commonly, excessive sleepiness. These suppositories could be used by parents and other caregivers whenever necessary.
