Molecular neurogenetics: the genome is settling the issue
Article Abstract:
Two 1997 studies illustrate the gains that can be made in understanding genetic diseases when the genes linked to the disease are discovered. One study found evidence for a link between Alzheimer's disease and chromosomes 4, 6, 12, and 20. Chromosome 12 in particular was strongly linked to Alzheimer's disease. Three other genes are already known to be involved in the disease. The other study found significant associations between certain HLA genes and multiple sclerosis. In addition, a gene on chromosome 19 separate from the APOE gene seems to be involved. There are an estimated 70,000 genes affecting the brain, of which only 1,000 to 2,000 are known.

Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to identify biomarkers associated with both the risk of meningoenecephalitis and antibody responsiveness. Expression patterns of genes related to apoptosis and proinfalmmatory pathways are identified as biomarkers of risk for the development of meningoencepphalitis.

Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Project has shown that many genes and proteins in flies, worms, and yeast are similar to the same genes and proteins in mammals and humans. Even genes and proteins involved in nervous system diseases have counterparts in lower organisms.
