Mortality among U.S. veterans of the Persian Gulf war
Article Abstract:
US veterans who served in the Persian Gulf War have slightly higher mortality rates than other veterans but this is mostly due to accidents. Researchers compared death certificates of 695,516 Persian Gulf veterans and 746,291 other veterans. The death rate among the Persian Gulf veterans was slightly higher than the rate among the other veterans. However, this increased death rate was almost entirely attributable to a higher rate of accidents and other external causes of death. The rate of death from disease was no higher than in other veterans. And all the veterans still had death rates less than half the rate in the general population.

A mechanism of central sleep apnea in patients with heart failure
Article Abstract:
Increased sensitivity to carbon dioxide may lead to central sleep apnea in some patients with hear failure. Sleep apnea occurs when someone stops breathing temporarily during sleep. It can be caused by an obstruction in the throat, but it can also occur when the brain is unable to regulate breathing. In this case, it is called central sleep apnea. Researchers measured the breathing rates of 20 men with heart failure, 10 of whom had central sleep apnea, while they slept. Those with central sleep apnea were more sensitive to carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
