Improving the outcome of emergency department patients with a chief complaint of chest pain
Article Abstract:
A critical outcomes team at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO, focused on improving emergency department procedures for patients with chest pain. Reducing the complexity of the procedure for obtaining a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) was identified as a key element in improving care for chest pain. The process could be simplified by training emergency department staff members to perform the ECG. The work of the critical outcomes team, based on the Shewert-Deming FOCUS-PDCA model, led to plans for a chest pain center.
