Mother-infant home care drives quality in a managed care environment
Article Abstract:
A postpartum home care program can help provide quality care in spite of early discharge. Such programs need to become a standard part of postpartum care as they can help watch for complications, the ease of adaptation, and post-discharge education. A project confirming this view is described. It also supports the American Nurses Assn's position statement that all new families require home care after hospital discharge. In-hospital nursing care will continue to decrease as a result of capitation and hospitals' need to survive, yet new mothers and their babies need and deserve postpartum nursing care.

The quality evolution in managed care organizations: shifting the focus to community health
Article Abstract:
The managed care organization's quality challenge is combining the efforts of the organization to improve the health of the population it serves with the community's and to measure results repeatedly so that the effectiveness of the community's initiatives and of health service delivery are clear. The collaboration of the two is necessary to improve community health status and to build attitudes sustaining health prevention. Empowered and informed consumers of medical care help build a healthier community by greater involvement in self-care.
