Multiple sclerosis: primary health care implications
Article Abstract:
It appears appropriate that primary health care providers familiarize themselves with the basic characteristics and treatment options for patients with multiple sclerosis. The insulating and conductive sheath encasing the cells of the central nervous system called myelin deteriorate in patients with multiple sclerosis. Either a virus or immune system defect may be responsible for this deterioration. Interferon beta and copolymer 1 treatments have shown promise in delaying progression of this disease.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) a chronic, inflammatory disease which causes oral lesions and pain afflicts over half of the population and treatment should focus on reduction of symptoms and individual patient needs. Commonly known as canker sores, RAS can be easily misdiagnosed and difficult to treat. Healthcare providers should educate themselves concerning diagnosis, treatment and prevention of RAS.
