Women's health specialty, other issues on agenda of 'Reframing' conference
Article Abstract:
Participants in an Oct 1992 conference on women's health discussed a possible new specialty in women's health, ways to include more women in clinical studies and methods to increase the number of women faculty members and researchers in medicine. Some conferees believe that women deserve their own specialists just as children and the elderly have. They say that gynecology and obstetrics focuses on surgical treatment, and is not true primary care. Others think that all doctors should participate in women's health care, regardless of their specialty. They believe that all medical students and residents should receive comprehensive education and training in women's health. The National Institutes of Health has mandated that more women be included in clinical studies. A new journal, the Journal of Women's Health, will publish some of the papers presented at the conference in its second issue.

Drug Firm Suit Fails to Halt Publication of Canadian Health Technology Report
Article Abstract:
The suit by Bristol-Myers against the Canadian Coordinating Office of Health Technology Assessment (CCOHTA) illustrates how a pharmaceutical company may try to influence physicians' prescribing patterns. CCOHTA prepares technical reviews of health care topics for physicians. A 1997 review claimed that most statin drugs will probably be effective in lowering cholesterol levels. Bristol Myers Squibb Canada Inc sued to prevent the publication of this report, which it believed would affect the sales of Bristol's statin drug, pravastatin. A lower court denied the suit and a Canadian appeals court has upheld that decision.
