Mutations in the gene for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, homocysteine levels, and vitamin status in women with a history of preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
A mutation in the gene for an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase may cause elevated blood levels of homocysteine in some pregnant women, which in turn may increase their risk of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy.

Association of the C677T methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase mutation and elevated homocysteine levels with congenital cardiac malformations
Article Abstract:
A mutation in the gene for an enzyme involved in methionine production and increased homocysteine levels are associated with congenital heart defects, according to a study of 142 pregnancies. The gene mutation has also been linked to neural tube defects.

Clinical and genetic evaluation of thirty ovarian cancer families
Article Abstract:
Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may be the cause of ovarian cancer in some women. These genes were first linked to breast cancer. Researchers used DNA analysis to detect mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in 25 families of 50 ovarian cancer patients. Forty percent of the families had a mutation in one of the genes. Nine different mutations of the BRCA1 gene and one mutation of the BRCA2 gene were identified. The cloning of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in 1994-1995 allows researchers to directly test blood samples for mutations.
