NCQA widens its scope
Article Abstract:
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) plans to evaluate groups of physicians according to its new Physician Organization Certification Program. The groups' health plans will be offered accreditation based on one or more of six areas including quality management, utilization, preventive health services and record keeping. Some physicians express concern that the NCQA's certification program may duplicate the efforts of the AMA's accreditation program.

YPS: more to quality than board certification
Article Abstract:
The Young Physicians Section (YPS) of the American Medical Association is expressing concern over the emphasis placed by hospitals and managed care plans on board certification as the primary means of evaluating the quality of physician competency. At a Dec 1996 meeting in Atlanta, GA, YPS section delegates voted for routine monitoring of certification and recertification requirements, eligibility rules and passage rate statistics.
