NICE launches new guidelines on managing stress urinary incontinence
Article Abstract:
The Management of Urinary Incontinence in Women, the new guidelines for treatment of urinary incontinence (UI) from NICE, provides help in the management of stress urinary incontinence (UI), overactive bladder and urge and mixed UI. The guidance recommends simple assessment tools, such as bladder diaries to assess urinary frequency and incontinence episodes in women and emphasizes the importance of imparting pelvic floor muscle training as a preventive strategy for women in their first pregnancy.

Assessment, diagnosis and treatment options for women with stress, urge or mixed urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder syndrome are provided. Women presenting with UI must be assessed and managed properly and conservative management with physical therapies such as pelvic floor training and recommended lifestyle changes should generally be the first-line option.
