Nursing is a vocation
Article Abstract:
Two nurses give differing opinions about the perception of nursing as a vocation. One nurse says that his vocational approach to nursing gives him the satisfaction of knowing he is doing an important job which satisfies his social, spiritual and political conscience. A nurse lecturer maintains that the perception of nursing as a job performed for financial reward promotes a more professional approach. Nurses who enter the profession to satisfy other personal needs will create barriers to fulfilling the aim of nursing, which is to promote independence or maximize quality of life.

Research and local audit to improve nursing care
Article Abstract:
A telephone audit was conducted on 30 men who had undergone transurethral resection of the prostate five weeks previously. The men were then interviewed to assess how effective the surgery had been. The men were keen to participate and 96% said their symptoms had improved greatly. Improved urinary flow and sleep were the two main benefits. Three of the four patients who had not done well were elderly. Health care staff were able to use the audit to clarify information with patients. The audit proved that the procedure was beneficial and staff felt more confident about it.
