Neighborhood social environment and risk of death: multilevel evidence from the Alameda County study
Article Abstract:
A study in Alameda County, CA found an association between social environmental characteristics and risk for mortality that was greater than independent individual risk factors. Mortality risks were significantly higher in neighborhoods with low social environment even when independent risk factors such as income level, education, race and ethnicity, perceived health status, smoking, alcohol consumption and body mass index were taken into account. The study concludes that more attention should be focused on the meaning and measurement of neighborhood quality.
