Article Abstract:

Self-understanding and self-help are important aspects of diabetes control. Local groups are therefore of value to diabetic patients in that they enable patients to exchange helpful information with one another. They also provide a forum for health professionals to give talks. Examples include an exercise and lifestyle programme organised by the Diabetes Watch project, and family conferences, organised by the British Diabetic Association, which supply information to the parents of diabetic children and allow the children to talk about their condition.

Article Abstract:

A woman whose behaviour became more erratic due to Alzheimer's Disease was put into a residential nursing home which she had to pay for herself. Her behaviour deteriorated and she was put into a secure nursing home, which she was also expected to pay for. The woman's daughter argues that her mother needs nursing care which should be paid for by the National Health Service. She is angry that no-one in Social Services or the health service mentioned to her that financial assistance may be available and she is now appealing for funding.

The American Nurses' Association (ANA) has endorsed presidential candidate Bill Clinton's package of health care reforms. Clinton advocates employer contributions to health care insurance. The ANA also supports a public contribution to reduce costs. The ANA approves Clinton's proposals for preventive medicine and community-based care and his proposed expansion of home care for elderly and disabled people. Clinton has criticised the employment of unlicensed staff.
