New CDC head: fight AIDS with education, not politics
Article Abstract:
David Satcher, whose appointment as head of the Centers for Disease Control takes effect in Jan 1994, believes that education is critical to AIDS prevention efforts. Explicit educational messages must be targeted to appropriate audiences without fear of political, religious or cultural objections. Those who would be offended by explicit materials would not be forced to view them. Satcher has proven his administration abilities in his work at Meharry's Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, TN, and AIDS activists approve of his aggressive AIDS education plan.

AIDS researchers hit U.S. refusal on needle exchange
Article Abstract:
Thirty-two AIDS researchers sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala criticizing the government's refusal to fund needle-exchange programs to prevent the spread of HIV among intravenous drug users. Under a 1988 law, the government banned such programs until they have been proven to be effective in preventing HIV spread while not simultaneously spreading illegal drug use. The researchers claim that these conditions have now been proven.

U.S. inspectors watching, but no beef over meat yet
Article Abstract:
US public health authorities are responding to British reports of a possibly new type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), so-called 'mad cow disease,' with increased vigilance. Researchers believe, but have not proved, that the disease results from eating meat from cows that have bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have heightened their CJD surveillance activities.
