New patent rules drive Indian drug firms to research
Article Abstract:
An international patent agreement that goes into effect on 1 January 2005 is forcing Indian drug companies to invest money into research and development, joining with companies abroad and find advanced ways to stay in business. Indian pharmaceutical companies are rushing to stave off loss by shifting from business-driven research to research-driven projects.

'Sumo' rats set researchers on hunt for obesity genes
Article Abstract:
The researchers from India and US in a new joint project are identifying and cloning the genes responsible for the 'sumo' rats that weigh in at about 1.4 kilograms about four times the standard weight for a rat. The sumo rats serve as good paradigms for human disorders such as diabetes and infertility.

India has embarked on a fast-track program to discover new drugs by building on traditional medicines and screening the country's diverse plant and microbial resources. It is believed that, although the project is commercial in intent, there is some need for basic research.
