Nurse executives in the 1990s: empowered or oppressed?
Article Abstract:
Nursing executives are at the center of change, involved in reengineering of healthcare systems and implementing new procedures. They also are involved in downsizing staff. Nevertheless nurse executives and nurses as a group can be seen as an oppressed group, feeling marginalized. They may internalize values of physicians and the medical model and lack self-esteem, acting in a passive-aggressive way. Oppressed groups can be empowered, the cycle of oppression broken, if the process of liberation starts at the grassroots level.

Multicultural considerations for the advanced practice nurse anesthetist in the preoperative teaching area
Article Abstract:
The job of pre-operative patient education done by advanced practice nurse anesthetists is more complex when dealing with culturally diverse patients. In these cases, it is important to do a cultural assessment in which the nurse learns about the patient's beliefs and values, the perspective from which the patient will view any information. Establishing rapport and communication can follow this so that information transferred will be clearly understood and presented in an acceptable manner.
