Nurse practitioner reimbursement: history and politics
Article Abstract:
The presence of an 85% federal reimbursement initiative in the 1996 Republican budget bill and its uncertain status during subsequent budget battles should represent a call to nurses to work continuously to voice their needs in government. Nurse organizations and lobbyists' persistent efforts throughout the legislative process kept the initiative alive in Congress and eventually nurses were allowed an 85% reimbursement from Medicare and other federal programs. Though nurses were successful in this endeavor they must work hard to maintain their lobbying presence in Washington.

1996 ends on a positive note
Article Abstract:
Much progress has been made at the national level during 1996 on behalf of nursing practitioners (NPs). Anecdotal comments as well as official federal documents have portrayed NPs in a positive light and have paved the way for more comprehensive reimbursement guidelines. Legislators have passed bills to increase funding during fiscal year 1997 for nursing research, education, and occupational safety and health nursing programs. State licensing and across state-line licensing issues remain to be resolved.

The power of nurse practitioners
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioners (NPs) should become politically active and let their legislators know why they should support a new reimbursement law. A group of Maryland NPs were frustrated by conflicting and confusing Medicare and Medicaid regulations and started a grassroots effort for reform that has spread across the nation. The 104th Congress came close to passing new reimbursement legislation, and with enough pressure from NPs and their patients, the 105th Congress may follow through.
