Nurses just make beds, don't they?
Article Abstract:
Nursing has traditionally been viewed negatively by Asians in the UK. The Positively Diverse initiative, which began in Bradford, England, in 1995, is seeking to challenge this view and to encourage members of ethnic minorities, especially Asians, to consider a career in nursing. This initiative has included establishing the UK's first nursing cadet scheme aimed specifically at people from ethnic minority groups. Barbara Burford, who established Positively Diverse, is now on attachment to the Dept of Health and is spreading the scheme to 40 sites across the UK.

The stuff of life
Article Abstract:
The UK government is running a national campaign to increase the number of people from ethnic minority groups who give blood on a voluntary basis. Only 6% of the national blood supply is donated by ethnic minorities in 1999. It is important to raise the amount of ethnically-donated blood available in the National Health Service as Asian and black people have different requirements associated with ethnic-originated diseases which often means blood from Caucasians is inappropriate.
