Nursing supply and demand: reviewing the evidence
Article Abstract:
It can be difficult to gain accurate information about the supply of, and demand for, nurses in the UK, as most work on this subject is local or anecdotal. There has been growing media coverage of shortages of qualified nursing staff, but there are still mixed views about the extent and the nature of these shortages. It is now time to develop and maintain a national overview of the nursing labour market, as well as to boost the workforce planning capabilities of National Health Service trusts.

The numbers game
Article Abstract:
Newly qualified nurses are unable to get jobs because nursing posts have not increased as expected. Workforce redeployment and greater effort by nurses have accommodated inceased patient needs. Nurses are changing National Health Service jobs less frequently and fewer are leaving the service. Financial constraints have forced mature nurses to seek re-employment.
