Nursing the nomads
Article Abstract:
Some 85% of people in northern Mali prefer to use traditional medicine rather than western style medicine. The government had plans to increase the number of health care facilities and vaccinate some 80% of people but lack of money has curtailed some of their proposals. The Mali government built a health centre at Tin-hamma, on the outskirts of the Sahara desert. The only trained nurse provides medical care for 9,6765 people. Nurse Mr Iboula holds two clinics every day, six days a week. Iboula and his health care assistant treat a wide variety of conditions. He also attends home births.

Sexuality: a challenge for nursing practice
Article Abstract:
It is important that nursing assessments include information on a patient's sexuality because it is an integral part of their life and helps to define their body image. Nurses may feel reluctant to delve into such personal issues or may not know how to approach the subject in an appropriate way. However, many conditions and drug treatments will affect sexual functioning and it is important patients know about this. Humour is one strategy which may help start a discussion. Better training about sexuality and healthcare for nurses would be a start.
