Nutrition and immune function
Article Abstract:
Nutrition is important to the immune system because certain vitamins have been linked to antibody response while the natural barriers to infection only function when healthy. The natural barriers include the gut, the skin and various enzymes that have anti-bacterial actions. The specific immunities involve antibodies that target specific antigens. These systems are affected by both under-nutrition and over-nutrition. The difficulties are strongest for the elderly and infants.
