No room for change
Article Abstract:
A comparison of institutional care with community care of mentally-ill patients from Tooting Bec Hospital, London, England has revealed few changes in practice. The move to a residential home aimed to foster independence and a more socially-integrated lifestyle. However, staff retained an institutional mentality. The criticisms of hospital practice embodied in a 1986 Health Advisory Services report were still evident almost one year after transition limiting rehabilitation.

Living and learning in supported housing
Article Abstract:
Direct care staff need support in rehabilitating formerly institutionalised mentally-ill patients in the community. A multidisciplinary approach aids integration. Staff require training for new roles to remove reliance on institutional practices. West lambeth Community Care Trust, London, England has introduced a multidisciplinary community support team to advise staff on assessing clients, establishing care plans and providing necessary training.
