Japan/United States collaboration in international HIV prevention and care
Article Abstract:
The US and Japan will benefit greatly from cooperating in the international fight against AIDS. The US has 15 years' experience in fighting the epidemic, much of which was gained during a time when the government refused to acknowledge the disease. The focus of the worldwide epidemic is shifting away from Africa to Asia. In 1993, the two countries formed the United States/Japan Common Agenda for Cooperation in Global Perspective. Each country can benefit from the experience of the other and can use their combined funds to assist other countries.

HIV prevention and community-based organizations in Japan
Article Abstract:
The rise of the AIDS epidemic in Japan has resurrected community-based organizations (CBO). Community organizations were once a basic part of Japanese society, but the concept diminished after World War II. Many Japanese believed AIDS was a Western disease, but by 1985, many hemophiliacs had contracted the disease through contaminated blood products. Most gay men in Japan have led quiet lives and many Japanese prefer not to discuss AIDS. However, in 1992, many CBOs begin to develop and by 1995, there were 56 CBOs in Japan devoted to AIDS.
