Obstacles seen in physician use of guidelines
Article Abstract:
The development of practice guidelines for physicians is increasing, yet implementation is slow. Doctors cite time demand as the primary factor affecting guideline implementation. Gregory Angstman, medical director of the Mayo Clinic's Practice Guidelines Development and Measurement Program, recommends focusing on 12 to 15 key practices when developing physician guidelines. Computerized, real-time guidelines will assist physicians in integrating preventive screenings and disease management practices.

Association stands firm in opposition to suicide
Article Abstract:
American Medical Association (AMA) delegates voted down a proposal to switch the AMA's official position on physician-assisted suicide from opposed to neutral. In discussion before the vote, opponents of the proposal outnumbered supporters by a 10-to-1 margin. Several delegates criticized court decisions declaring a right to assisted suicide, but others said patients should have a choice. The delegates agreed the AMA should educate doctors better about the needs of dying patients.
